Sherbrite - PMC Specialties Group - Plating Brighteners

SHERBRITE® products are high quality plating brighteners available from PMC Specialties Group, Inc. Analysis of the product shows it to be exceptionally free of impurities, extraneous material and competing ions, which might interfere with the plating process. These properties enable formulators to produce bright Nickel plate from solutions, which have no harmful breakdown products, and are economical to use.

SHERBRITE® products are primary brighteners for Nickel plating baths, usually in conjunction with a secondary or “Class II” type organic brightener. SHERBRITE® provides both economic and quality improvements to the plating process.

SHERBRITE® BENEFITS ARE:

  • Produces a bright deposit over a wider range of current densities.
  • Permits a much greater tolerance of organic and inorganic impurities in the bath.
  • Reduces internal stress and brittleness produced by the secondary brightener.
  • Permits use of lower concentrations of the secondary brightener.
  • Improves coverage of the electro-deposit.
  • Produces smooth deposits.
  • Reduces or eliminates laminations and effectively controls grain size.
  • Contributes to high leveling, with resulting deposits that really hide polishing scratches in the base metal.
  • Facilitates the release of hydrogen bubbles, thereby reducing the tendency to pitting.

SAFETY: SHERBRITE® products are considered harmless in typical industrial usage. It contributes no harmful ingredients to plating solutions. No special precautions are needed other than good manufacturing and housekeeping practices.

Chemically all SHERBRITE® products are 1,2-Benzisothiazolin-3-one-1,1-dioxide commonly known as Saccharin. SHERBRITE® 85 and 30 are the sodium salt while SHERBRITE® 98 is sodium free.

SHERBRITE® 98 (Sodium Free), CAS Registry #: 81-07-2

A white powder, SHERBRITE® 98 is the sodium free “insoluble” form of saccharin. It is particularly useful in establishing plating baths of no or low sodium ion content. It’s low water solubility (0.003%) may require adjustment of other plating bath components, but generally, the pH and other components in the bath will impart adequate solubility.

SHERBRITE® 85 (Granular Solid), CAS Registry #: 128-44-9

A white granular solid, SHERBRITE® 85, is crystalline Sodium Saccharin. It contains 15% maximum water of hydration in the crystal. It is highly water-soluble.

SHERBRITE® 30 (A 30% Solution in water) CAS Registry #: 128-44-9

A clear, colorless to light straw colored solution, SHERBRITE® 30 is a convenient to use aqueous solution of Sodium Saccharin, 29-32% active. It has a specific gravity of 1.143-1.182 and density of 9.6-9.8 lbs/gal. It contains the equivalent of 3.43 lbs. of SHERBRITE® 85 per gallon.
